Just this same year Rev. Joseph E. Lowery received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the Nation’s highest civilian honor according to President Barack Obama in a letter dated September 15, 2009.  In that same letter to Rev. Lowery President Obama said he could only reach the office he now holds, by standing on shoulders of giants like Rev. Lowery.  On October 11, 2009, with the blessings from the president and many others, Rev. Lowery celebrated his 88th Birthday in the Chapel Auditorium at Morehouse College.  A star studded event that included Aretha Franklin, Samuel Jackson, Alfre Woodard, Boris Kodjoe, Nicole Ari Parker, Victoria Rowell, Jasmine Guy, Savion Glover and many, many more.

Savion Glover, the master tap dancer first dazzled the audience with fantastic moves and incredible steps.  Coverage by Angelo Omar Muhammad of A-1 Video Production.   Video presentations were shown that bore witness to the life, work and legacy that Rev. Lowery has stood for.  The hosts for the evening included Samuel Jackson, Alfre Woodard, Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker.

Vocal presentations were offered by Georgia State Representative Alisha Thomas Morgan, APS 2008 Teacher of the Year Charon L. Kirkland, Marta Mechanic Anthony Crest, congressman Emanuel Cleaver II, Chloe Bailey, Fonzworth Bentley, Kieth David, Cassi Davis, Jasmine Guy, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Victoria Rowell and Myketi Williamson.

The Queen of Soul tore the house down as usual singing many gospel tunes along with some standards and she even added a few new songs slated for release on her upcoming CD.  When Rev. Lowery and his lovely wife came on stage near what seemed to be the end of the program he encouraged Aretha to belt out a few more of her hits including R-E-S-P-E-C-T which is one of his favorites.  He couldn’t help but to dance when the song start and encouraged his wife to join in the fun.  He showed the crowd that he still had the moves.

Many dignitaries were also in attendance including Rev. Jesse Jackson, Walter Fauntroy, Andrew Young and Minister Sharrieff Muhammad representing the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan.  The night was filled with music, fun, laughter and was the perfect way to honor a man who has dedicated his life to freedom, justice and civil rights.
