Alan Hutcheson, author of the comic novel Boomerang, has become part of the first wave of authors joining Operation eBook Drop, a program designed to connect military personnel serving overseas with writers who are providing the troops with coupons to redeem on Smashwords.com for free ebooks.
Operation eBook Drop is a grass roots effort started by author Edward C. Patterson (The Jade Owl and many others) which was quickly joined by Smashwords.com founder Mark Coker. Hutcheson first heard about the project to provide ebooks to deployed service members through Kindleboards.com, a forum dedicated to the ebook device sold by Amazon. The growth in the number of military personnel using ebook readers has been tremendous in the past couple of years due to their ability to hold a library's worth of volumes in a compact, easily transportable package. The opportunity to make Boomerang available to soldiers at no cost was an easy decision for Hutcheson. "My nephew was deployed to the Middle East several years ago and many of my friends either have or have had sons or daughters serve far away from home. Operation eBook Drop is a great way to not only say thanks but hopefully provide a few hours of escape and entertainment. I can't send them all cookies, but I can send them a fun book that I'm really happy to say has quickly become one of the bestselling ebooks on Smashwords."
