—The birth of the Chiefs and Cowboys was in the same nursery, as these teams were born with the creation of the American Football League. Lamar Hunt announced the league in early August 1959, including his Dallas Texans. Within a month NFL owners were talking about an expansion team in Dallas. That came true in January 1960 when the creation of the Rangers, who later took the name Cowboys.

The Texans and Cowboys shared the Cotton Bowl in Dallas for three seasons (1960-62). At the time, the Texans were the best product on the field, going 26-17 and winning the 1962 AFL Championship Game against the Oilers. The Cowboys were 9-28-3 during those three seasons. Team attendance figures for those seasons show the Cowboys at 452,946 fans, with the Texans drawing 449,909.

The series between these teams featured one major upset, when in 1975 the Chiefs went to Texas Stadium for a Monday night game and won 34-31, beating a Cowboys team that would end up in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs that season were 5-9, but got a big game from RB Ed Podolak, who scored a pair of touchdowns while rushing for 88 yards. It's the only victory the Chiefs have enjoyed in Dallas since the franchise left after the 1962 season.

The winner of this game will receive the Preston Road Trophy, a traveling trophy that was created by the late Lamar Hunt. It is presented to the winning owner whenever the Chiefs and Cowboys play each other, be it regular season or preseason. Both Jerry Jones and his family and the Hunts lived in the same Dallas neighborhood where the major artery is Preston Road. Lamar's widow Norma still lives there. Jones currently holds the trophy due to the Cowboys victory over the Chiefs back in the 2005 season.

A Cowboys win on Sunday would improve their series advantage to 6-3 and give them their 81st win over an AFC team since 1970, tying San Francisco for the most among NFC teams.

   *

This week's game at the Kansas City will lead into the Cowboys' bye week. Since 1990 when the bye week was installed, the Cowboys hold an impressive 16-4 record in games preceding the bye. Dallas had a streak of five consecutive wins leading into bye weeks (1990-1993), which includes the 1993 season in which the team had two bye weeks.

Currently, Dallas has won four straight games when heading into a bye week. Dallas has played on the road nine times the week before its bye and holds a 6-3 record in those games.
   *

How bad was last season's loss to the Rams? St. Louis has lost 14 straight games and been outscored by 235 points, while being shut out twice, since its victory against the Brad Johnson-led and Tony Romo-less Cowboys.
   *

Since starting the 2007 season with a 12-1 mark, the Cowboys have gone 12-12, including the playoffs. No one typifies the decline more than quarterback Tony Romo. He has a 12-9 record as a starter since then, completing 435 of 719 passes for 5,297 yards with 33 touchdowns and 23 interceptions and an 85.2 passer rating. Those aren't bad numbers. They just aren't great numbers. Romo has been an average quarterback over the last two years, not the superstar quarterback that he has been built up to be.
