During a meeting reviewing last Sunday's 23-20 overtime win over Cleveland, Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis had some words of motivation for his team for this week's AFC North clash at Baltimore: "It's gonna be an all-day sucker."
That could also be the theme of the season to date. While the Bengals are 3-1 and a play away from an undefeated start, they are also about five plays away from being winless right now. Not since the Wallendas have the Bengals walked such a tricky tightrope.
"And the bad part about it is we're getting used to it," cornerback Leon Hall said following the Cleveland game.
In three of the four games, the Bengals have rallied for a go-ahead or game-winning drive behind Carson Palmer.
In those four late drives, Palmer is an astounding 21 of 33 for 221 yards with two touchdowns and a rating of 103.2. Throw out the two spikes to stop the clock in the Pittsburgh game, and the rating soars to 109.8.
The rest of the time? He's a pedestrian 58 of 104 for 624 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions for a rating of 66.4.
After being ignored last Sunday, the Ravens' running game could return Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals at M&T Bank Stadium.
When the Ravens swept the Bengals last season, they ran over them. In the first meeting, Baltimore rushed for 229 yards on 46 carries. In the second one, the Ravens gained 147 yards on the ground on 43 attempts.
The Bengals' run defense ranks 14th in the NFL, but it has shown cracks recently. Two weeks ago, Pittsburgh's Willie Parker ran for 93 yards against Cincinnati. Last Sunday, Cleveland's Jerome Harrison gained 121 yards vs. the Bengals. In each game, the Bengals allowed a 20-yard run.
But it remains to be seen whether the Ravens are committed to running the ball. Last season, no one in the NFL ran the ball more than the Ravens. This season, the Ravens have been a pass-first attack.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh staunchly defended the decision to have quarterback Joe Flacco throw a career-high 47 passes while a running attack that averaged 7.1 yards per carry languished in the Ravens' 27-21 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday
