K.L. Brady, author of the hilarious novel The Bum Magnet, has joined a group of over 60 independent authors with books published in Kindle and other Ebook formats to provide free ebooks to troops serving overseas.
Operation Ebook Drop, created by US Army veteran and indie author Edward Patterson, began when Patterson had a chance encounter with a deploying soldier. The soldier indicated he had a Kindle but could not access books, so Ed offered up his 13 Kindle edition novels and enlisted Brady and other indie authors to join the program. Smashwords.com founder Mark L. Coker heard about the effort and has been a major proponent and supporter. Through his site, authors create 100-percent discount coupons so that troops can download indie novels for free. So far, Operation Ebook drop provided free books to nearly 30 US troops, but the number is growing every day.
“I jumped at the opportunity to offer The Bum Magnet in the program. As a military contractor, I got an up close and personal view of what the troops do for our country every day,” says Brady, who worked at the Pentagon and supported the Iraq effort for several years before publishing her novel. “They make enormous sacrifices, and this program offered me a small way to provide them with laughter and and enjoyment and say ‘I appreciate what you're doing. Thanks.’”
