Holiday Law Questions Answered on Law Donut

New legal website for UK SMEs has plain English answers to common employee holiday questions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Oct 10, 2009 -
Bristol, UK,  Can you require staff to work on a bank holiday? What if an employee buys cheap tickets at the last minute and suddenly wants two weeks off? The answers to these and other common employee holiday questions are now available free on Law Donut, a free resource that’s been developed specially for UK SMEs.

Law Donut is all about providing practical legal advice to UK SMEs. While not an alternative to individual legal counsel, Law Donut has been designed as a first port of call – a place business owners and managers can go to get a good, easy-to-understand overview of the issues, so they can then seek out the kind of professional help they need.

The site has comprehensive range of resources including over 1300 FAQs and easy-to-follow explanations and resources covering of a huge range of legal areas, from health and safety to insolvency, remuneration and pensions to disputes. As well as information, the site includes handy checklists and other useful tools.

As for the holidays questions at the start of this article, Law Donuts experts advise that yes an employer can require staff to work on a bank holiday, unless their employment contract specifies they are entitled to bank holidays off. However, they must give adequate notice - one day’s notice for each day you require the employees to be available for work.

For a staff member making a last minute holiday request, the law says the employer is entitled to ask for two days' notice for every day of leave requested. So if your employee wants to take two weeks off, she should have given you four weeks' notice.
