Gastric band surgery is a procedure which involves placing a silicone band around the stomach to reduce the amount of food eaten. How does Gastric Band Surgery work?

How is the gastric band adjusted?

He/she will press a button on the handheld device which causes a signal to be sent to the transmitter and the receiver. The receiver then sends that signal to the tiny microchip inside the ring. This tells the ring to expand or contract. What is especially useful is that the surgeon can receive feedback about the current state of the ring and can make any necessary changes. This is seen as a less uncomfortable procedure than the other two conventional systems. It is still at an experimental stage though and there is no long term evidence to prove or disprove its effectiveness.

Potential complications of Gastric Band Surgery:

A commonly reported occurrence for banded patients is regurgitation of non-acidic swallowed food from the upper pouch, commonly known as Productive Burping (PBing). [Citation needed]. Productive Burping is not to be considered normal. The patient should consider eating less, eating more slowly, or chewing their food more thoroughly. Occasionally, the narrow passage into the larger / lower part of the stomach may become blocked by a large portion of unchewed or unsuitable foodstuff. [Citation needed]
