Featured Concerts and Guests of Honor

On Saturday, November 7 at 8pm, a concert featuring Marco Granados and Matthias Ziegler will be held at Nichols Hall in the Music Institute of Chicago.
Granados is one of the foremost Latin American flutists in the world today.  Based in Venezuela and New York City, he has collaborated with the Camertato Latinamericano, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Caramoor International Music Festival.  He will perform works with members of the acclaimed ensemble, Un Mundo.

Ziegler, based in Zurich, Switzerland, performs with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and the Collegium Novum Zurich when he is not on concert tours.  He will present selections that cross traditional musical boundaries, employ an array of flutes and utilize electronic accompaniment.

The following afternoon, Sunday, November 8 at 3pm, Nichols Hall will again be the venue for a recital by the eminent British flutist William Bennett and Denis Bouriakov, the newly-appointed principal flute of the Metropolitan Opera orchestra.
While his focus is now presenting recitals and holding master classes around the world, Bennett was for many years the leading British orchestral flutist holding the position of principal flute in the English Chamber Orchestra and serving as a guest with other orchestras in the United Kingdom.  His students have won international competitions and hold positions in leading orchestras and conservatories.

Born in the Ukraine and trained in Russia and the United Kingdom, Bouriakov has won several of the most prestigious international competitions including those held in Paris, Beijing, Munich, Greece, Prague, and Kobe.  He recently was appointed principal flute of the NYC Metropolitan Opera orchestra by James Levine.  His teachers include William Bennett with whom he will be sharing the stage.

Additional Highlights of Chicago Flute Club’s Festival 2009

The Festival will begin with a sold-out banquet and awards ceremony on Friday, November 6 that celebrates the careers of Bennett and flute maker Jack Moore.  A world-premiere by Chicago composer Lita Grier will be performed by the Chicago Flute Quartet.
During the course of the weekend, Festival attendees will participate in national competitions, master classses, and lectures. The Festival will also feature demonstrations by leading flutists from Chicago and the Midwest. More than 350 people are expected to participate in this biannual event.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for music lovers throughout Chicago and the Midwest to enjoy recitals by some of the most respected flutists in the world,” said Florence Nelson, president of the Chicago Flute Club. “Attendees will be able to learn about a wide variety of topics that pertain to flute performance and pedagogy.”
