A public meeting will be held this Saturday, October 10th in Sioux Falls to address how to change existing South Dakota laws related to animal cruelty.
The public is encouraged to attend. Held at the Whisk & Chop in downtown Sioux Falls. The meeting will begin at 3:00 pm.
Sharee Heier of Sioux Falls has attended two previous meetings in August and September.
"I've always been interested and passionate about animals and their welfare, however, it was the continued animal abuse with no consequences to the abuser that I kept hearing about in the media that finally I could no longer ignore."
Heier, who is an assistant in administration of a regional hospital, feels certain actions meet the need for felony punishment.
"Like parenting, if the child has no serious consequences to his bad actions, he's not going to quit doing them. We need stricter consequences for those who hurt or neglect our pets and we need these consequences to follow them through out their life. As a mother, citizen, grandmother, woman, I need to know these people aren't working at my grandson's school, my mother's nursing home or sitting next to me at work."
Heier hopes more people will take action and contact their representatives.
"I believe there is Power in numbers. We need to notify those who can change our current laws in SD and let them know how we feel and we need to be persistent."
A public meeting will also be held in Lake County, South Dakota. Concerned voters will meet Sunday, October 11th at 1:00pm in Madison at the Second Street Diner.
