Computerized Axial Tomography – “CAT” or “CT scans – are the current industry standard because of their relative low cost, but these scans are limited in their ability to prove mild traumatic brain injuries. Diffusion Tensor Imaging or “DTI” scans provide clearer images of nerve-fiber bundles in brain injuries because water diffusion is much faster along the length of the fibers than across them. These images are clinically vital in showing interruption of normal fiber anatomy by trauma.

In a 2007 University of Texas–Houston Medical School study, researchers found that “Diffusion Tensor Imaging performed within six days post injury showed increased fractional anisotropy and decreased diffusivity suggestive of cytotoxic edema.”
