A research paper released this month has revealed that relaxed attitudes of drug abuse from peers and relatives can increase a teenager's likelihood of indulging in the behavior. The research, carried out by the Weill Cornell Medical College, also identifies that there are gender differences in troubled teens' attitudes towards drug abuse. These findings are in turn prompting parents and teachers to take a closer look at better ways of parenting teens.

The study, carried out on 2400 teenagers in grades six and seven, showed that girls were more likely to follow drug abuse behavior if their friends said it was acceptable, whereas boys were more concerned about how the majority of their age group acted. While these findings might worry parents, who feel they have no control over their child's attitudes, they may be useful in getting help for teens through external organizations. ParentingTeens.com, for example, is an online portal for parents of teenagers who would like information and guidance with their experiences. Staff at ParentingTeens.com are keen to maintain that parents still have a strong influence in their child's attitudes towards drug abuse.

“We encourage all parents to offer their opinions and experiences with any of the topics on our site” says ParentingTeens.com PR manager Michele Ballard. “We also would like to hear what parents of teenagers would like to see on this site.”

ParentingTeens.com gives members and visitors advice on troubled teens, drug abuse and many other topics through articles, discussions, and opinions from those who are parenting teenagers. Any member can contribute to the site and discussions continue in the world of Twitter where users follow @troubldteenhelp (web address: www.twitter.com/troubldteenhelp).

Parents of troubled teens involved in bad behavior are receiving higher levels of help from organizations than ever before, following a research study into teenage attitudes toward drug abuse. One online community, ParentingTeens.com, is keen for this type of information to become available to all of those parenting teens, as they share stories, challenges, opinions and ideas on the experience of raising an adolescent online.
