ABOUT CASTING FOR RECOVERY Casting for Recovery, established in 1996, is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit support and educational organization for women recovering from breast cancer which uses the sport of fly-fishing to encourage mental and physical healing. To alleviate the stresses and physical ailments of breast cancer, Casting for Recovery hosts a two and a half day retreat program to instruct women in the gentle casting techniques of fly fishing, which provide therapeutic motion for join and soft tissue stretching in areas affected by radiation or surgery. Nearly 1,500 active, trained volunteers or “River Helpers” will help plan and conduct 42 retreat in 27 states in 2009. Retreat volunteer teams are composed of women and men who are medical counseling professionals as well as fly fishing instructors. At the end of 2008, close to 3,500 women had participated in 269 Casting for Recovery retreat programs. The retreat is offered at no cost to the participants, and the Organization depends on donations from individuals, foundations, and companies to underwrite the costs of its programs.
