FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)Oct 06, 2009 – Kirkland, Wash.  RationalPicks.com, a leading NFL fan web site that applies advanced, proprietary mathematics to predict the outcome of professional football games, correctly predicted the winner of all 14 NFL games during Week 4 of the 2009 NFL season.  The correct picks for Week 4 included the Jacksonville Jaguars over the Tennessee Titans, the New England Patriots over the Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos over the Dallas Cowboys.  All three of these games were predicted incorrectly by the vast majority of experts at leading sports web sites.

“It’s gratifying to have a perfect week,” said Stan Shull, owner of Rational Sports, LLC and creator of RationalPicks.com. “While it doesn’t happen often, and there’s certainly an element of luck involved, it’s definitely a testament to the accuracy of the underlying mathematical models.  We bring a rational approach to predicting sports outcomes by applying the scientific method, and more times than not it will beat expert judgment.”

In addition to weekly Rational Picks, the RationalPicks.com web site also provides Rational Rankings, which are mathematically computed power rankings for every team in the NFL.  This season, for the first time, RationalPicks.com also offers Projected Final Standings.  Each week the entire remaining NFL season is simulated, based on updated performance data and other factors, to generate the predicted regular-season final standings.

On the season the “Rational Sports Machine” is now 46-16 for a combined 4-week accuracy of 74%.  The Rational Sports Machine is the moniker given to the complex set of computerized mathematical models, algorithms, data, statistics, and adaptive processes that generate the weekly Rational Picks.  Typically, it takes two or three weeks for the mathematical models to adjust to the new realities at the start of a season.  So while it’s not unusual for the 4th week of the NFL season to be a very good one for the computerized picks, it’s still rare for “The Machine” to be perfect.

The core underlying mathematical models of the Rational Sports Machine have been in test and production for many years, but RationalPicks.com first became a public web site for the 2008 NFL season.  Stan Shull, the founder and owner of Rational Picks, started predicting NFL football games at the age of 10.  As a teenager, Shull created his first mathematical system for predicting NFL outcomes and was delighted to discover that the model was more accurate than most TV commentators.  Over time, Shull’s passion for predicting NFL football blossomed into the more complex mathematical models in use today as well as the RationalPicks.com web site for football fans.
