Waukesha, WI – The Waukesha Choral Union (WCU) opens its 2009-2010 season October 25, 2009 presenting “Ah, Youth” at 3:00 p.m. in Shattuck Auditorium, Carroll University, Waukesha.  WCU shares the stage with Muskego and Waukesha South High School choirs, with a stunning finale of Aaron Copland’s “The Promise of Living,” performed by more than 160 singers.  Tickets are $13 for adults, $11 for seniors (60+) and students, $2 children (11 and under.)

“This is the first of three collaborative concerts planned for this season, aptly titled ‘Putting Together a Community of Singers’ to reflect the act of assembling a jigsaw puzzle,” said Waukesha Choral Union artistic director, Ernest Brusubardis, III.  “We are honored to share the stage with these young musicians.”

Waukesha South High School A Cappella Choir, under the direction of Jason Brinker, will share repertoire including standards such as Samuel Barber’s “Sure On This Shining Night;” an old Appalachian hymn tune, “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need;” a touching setting of “Good Night, Dear Heart” inspired by the tragic death of a four-month old child; and Native American Philip White Hawk’s upbeat “Hold On!”

Next the Waukesha Choral Union will share two settings of love songs.  Eric Whitacre’s “Five Hebrew Love Songs” for chorus and string quartet offers intimate treatments of texts written by his future wife, Hila Plitmann, which were inspired by his love for her.  The second piece includes excerpts of Johannes Brahms’ “Liebeslieder Waltzer,” a cycle of poems that explore the various aspects of love encompassing all of the passion, joy, and angst that comes with it.

Muskego High School Chorale and Chamber Choir, directed by Matthew Wanner, will present a program prepared for the Wisconsin Music Educators Association conference the last week of October.  This is an esteemed honor as only one or two high school groups are selected to perform at the conference each year.  They will sing selections from both classic and contemporary choral literature, including  “Stomp Your Foot!,” a lively excerpt from Aaron Copland’s opera “The Tenderland;”  standards such as Orlando Di Lasso’s “Tritt auf den Riegel von der Tür” and Robert Schumann’s “Zigeunerleben,” which will be paired with modern arrangements of a South African melody, “Jabula Jesu,” by Stephen Hatfield; and John David’s “You Are The New Day,” arranged by Peter Knight; and others.

Single and season ticket packages, with savings of up to 20 percent over regular prices, are available up to October 25, 2009 online at http://www.ChoralUnion.org or by phone at 414-297-9310.  Tickets also will be available the day of the concert.

Upcoming shows presented by Waukesha Choral Union include:

•   December 11 and 13, 2009, “Magnificat, Magnificat” assembles and explores several unique treatments of the biblical text of Mary discovering she is carrying Jesus, anchored by Vivaldi’s masterful setting.
•   March 28, 2010, the community at large becomes a piece of the puzzle in the annual tradition of inviting interested singers to join the WCU onstage for Haydn’s “Creation,” including full orchestra and soloists.
•   May 16, 2010 completes the big picture with a rare presentation of Verdi’s “Requiem,” performed in collaboration with Bel Canto Chorus, Milwaukee Choristers and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in the Oconomowoc Arts Center.

“The Waukesha Choral Union continues a long tradition of collaborating with other musicians and groups, putting together pieces of the very colorful and diverse arts community in which we live,” said Brusubardis. “I invite everyone to take part in our season of exciting live music performed in great venues by our community’s great ensembles.”

More information can be found online at http://www.ChoralUnion.org or by phone at 414-297-9310.

As the premiere vocal group in the area, the Waukesha Choral Union has been musically active in the community for over 50 years. Originally a combination of the Carroll College student chorus and community singers known as the Waukesha Choral Society in 1949, the group became the Town and Gown in 1961 and the Waukesha Choral Union in 1974, taking its present form as an auditioned choir in 1978.  For more information, visit http://www.ChoralUnion.org
