Royal Oak Middle School students stomachs are beginning to rumble as Eat So They Can (ESTC), the global fundraiser to help stop child poverty, draws near.

Eat So They Can is a Global Volunteer Network Foundation initiative that invites citizens of the world to take part in what is collectively one huge dinner party, where something as simple as sharing a meal with friends can help stop child poverty.
Caitie Goddard, formerly a student at Jane Addams Jr. High and girl’s varsity assistant coach at ROHS, has joined the campaign and pledged her support by organising a fundraising lunch for the community to ‘eat so they can’ on Saturday October 17.

“We are really hoping for a great turnout as this event is open to anyone interested in supporting an incredible cause. Not only are students and teachers welcome but anyone in the community!” said Ms Goddard.

The funds raised at the event will go towards supporting orphanages and schools in Africa and providing children with the essentials for survival. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 2009 statistics, 1.02 billion people do not have enough to eat - more than the populations of USA, Canada and the European Union.

Ms Goddard has just returned from volunteering in Uganda and she says this is a cause that is very close to her heart.

“I have seen first hand the impact that this money can have on the lives of the children living in these poverty-ridden countries. By joining ‘Eat So They Can’ you will have the chance to not only enjoy great food with friends, you will be making a difference to the lives of children in need,” said Ms Goddard.

The ESTC fundraiser supports the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty that is observed each year on October 17.
