November 1 -7, 2009 is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. In recognition of the valuable role that animal shelters provide in enhancing the quality of life of many animals Veterinary & Emergency Center of New England (VESCONE), a 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital, will be accepting donations, teaching classes and providing services to support Save A Dog shelter of Sudbury.
National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week was started in 1996 by The Humane Society of the United States and recognizes the many services that shelters provide to animals and people alike. Shelters are responsible for rescuing injured animals, returning lost pets to owners, controlling feral cats and at loose dogs, as well as adopting animals into new and loving homes.
To assist Save A Dog, an all breed, volunteer-based rescue group, in continuing with its mission of helping adoptable, friendly dogs find homes in New England, VESCONE will be accepting donations on its behalf at their facility located at 180 Bear Hill Road in Waltham. Towels, office supplies, dog crates, and gift cards to stores such as Wal-mart, Target and local pet stores, are just some ideas for donations.
In addition to gathering donations VESCONE’s Chief of Staff, Dr. Amy Shroff, will be teaching Pet First Aid classes to Save A Dog staff, fosters and volunteers. “There have been many patients over the year’s that have survived due to their owner’s quick thinking and knowledge of first aid” says Shroff “and I would like to share this knowledge with the Save A Dog staff and volunteers. They have done so much to save so many dogs and I want that to continue.”
A Meet n Greet will be held on Saturday, November 7 from Noon to 3 PM at the Save A Dog facility at 604 Boston Post Road in Sudbury where the public will be able to meet dogs available for adoption as well as learn pet tips from Dr. Shroff. “We invite everyone to come down on Saturday, November 7th to visit our dogs and to find out how you can help animals in need” says Shirley Moore co-founder of Save A Dog. The rescued dogs reside in foster homes to provide a better environment and easier transition to adoptive homes.
