The Culture Minister, Ángeles González-Sinde, presented this award in recognition of a career of professional and academic excellence in the field of Sociology and Political Science. The jury highlighted his international projection and capacity for innovation.
Barcelona, 30/09/2009 - The ceremony was also attended by the President of the Catalan Government, José Montilla, the Chair of the Centre for Sociological Research (CIS), Belén Barreiro, and the director of the Cervantes Institute, Carmen Cafarell.
Director of the IN3
Manuel Castells has held the post of Professor of Sociology and director of the IN3 since November 2008.
He is currently a member of the Governing Council of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, as well as Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Urban and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley, an institution where he taught and undertook research for twenty-four years.
Author of numerous books, Professor Castells’s most important work is The Information Age: Economy, Society and Culture, which has been translated into twenty languages and has become a benchmark study into the repercussion of information and communication technologies on our world. His latest book is Communication Power (OUP, 2009).
