Experience the passage of World War 2 through the eyes of a child. In Dark is the Dawn Cynthia Morey paints a vivid portrait of a typical English family ‘neither rich nor poor’ in the peaceful years prior to the declaration of war that ends a quiet life of school, holidays and games.
Things were never the same again and Morey movingly recounts her war time experiences against the background of major events – Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain, The Blitz, the Dambusters’ raid, D Day and final victory.
Morey tells of the anxieties and tragedies which, drawing people together, engendered the amazing wartime spirit that helped everyone to survive. Her great admiration and pride in the RAF began when her brother trained as a navigator on Wellington bombers, making regular night raids over Germany.
Even in the difficult conditions which then prevailed, life was not all doom and gloom; there were plenty of laughs too – often at the expense of the enemy – as she describes so well in this fascinating book.
Morey draws on memories and family documents – photos, diaries, childish drawings made in the shelter, fiercely patriotic poems, an RAF logbook – to recount the tale of an ordinary family in extraordinary times.
