The third spot in the PGA Grand Slam went to British Open champion, Stewart Cink. Winner of the 183rd Open championship, he had to endure a four hole playoff in order to win the tournament against 59 year old Tom Watson, who won this tournament back in 1977 and won many hearts as the great comeback story of the tournament.
Cink finished the tournament at 2 under par, with a 278, which happened to be the highest winning score from all the four British Opens held on the tumultuous course on the shores of Turnberry, Scotland.
Stewart Cink picked the right time to turn it on though, as the British Open win was his first top finish since the Travelers Championship in June 2008, and his 6th tournament victory overall (Cink also wom the MCI Classic in 2000, the MCI Heritage Open and the WGC NEC Invitational in 2004, along with the Canon Greater Hartford Open in 1997).
Currently ranked 28th, many pundits believed that Cink was on the way down, as opposed to spending a good portion of the 2004 through 2008 years in the top ten official world golf rankings. However, at the age of 36, he still has a good chance of being a top contender for some time. Being on the PGA tour since 1997, the 2009 win at the British Open marked his first victory on a major, so it won’t come as a surprise if the next four years proves pundits wrong.
Competing in this years PGA golf grand slam against Lucas Glover, Angel Cabrera and Y.E. Yang, Cink or Cabrera tend to be the choices of many golf experts, with the odds makers slightly favouring these two. Find out how it all unfolds by visiting the Port Royal Golf website at http://www.portroyalgolf.bm – hosts of the 2009 PGA Grand Slam of Golf, where you can read more about each of the players, or view close up shots of each hole on the golf course.
And if you can’t make it to Bermuda in October, Port Royal has partnered with Imagine Golf Club, on a game that simulates the scenic 16th hole of the course, where the best scores can win prizes, including a trip for two to Bermuda! Play the Port Royal game at http://www.imaginegolfclub.com/
