Portrait painter, Brian Neher, discusses the importance of preparing preliminary studies to show a client before starting work on the final portrait. These studies help to set a direction for the finished portrait and give the client a choice as to which pose they would like for the final painting. Along with examples of the artist's preliminary studies and finished portraits, the article also includes a step by step demonstration of a painting from start to finish. This eight page article gives in-depth information on Neher's working methods as well as the materials that he uses to paint commissioned portraits.
