Although the new semester is about to start, students as well as parents are quite worried due to the soaring education expense, rapidly changing college entrance examination requirements, and unreliable education policy. As the importance of essay education is embossed recently, another thing is added on the list to worry about. That is to say, the examinees this year should map out a super short-term strategy to cope with the essay examination and the reserve examinees should invest much on steady reading and writing for essay improvement in long-term.

Examinees preparing for 2010 college entry needs super short-term strategy. It should be known first that the necessary essay teaching materials have changed as the tendency of essay changed. It is less likely for hard readings to be given in exams now and the essay experts all agree that school books are enough to study with.

School books are the most effective teaching material to prepare for the changed essay examination. It also helps one’s study to know the type of essay. The fact integrated subject type essay shows the subject structure of concept and understanding, application and alternative proposal, as well as the fact it is observed to see how examinee understands, re-composes the information given in the reading and unfolds own opinion in consistent point of argument, not the matter of knowledge acquirement, should be noted.

In addition, it should not be forgotten that consistent study rather than rapid increment of study amount is important.

Having more time than examinees, how should reserve examinees prepare for the essay examination then?

First, it is necessary to have consistent interest in books and accumulate professional knowledge. The recent essay examinations have presented various genres of readings like literature, non-literature, visual art, film and statistics. It is good to read suggested must-read books for essay examination and such recommended by experts as well as daily newspaper and columns habitually.

Second is the matter of type; however, it should be written logically. Discordance between the content and type, lack of logic and structure in writings are contrary evidences of insufficient foundation for essay writing. In case like this, it is necessary to pay attention to ‘paragraph’. In case of logically writing, paragraph becomes the basic unit of unfolding logic or thought. To unfold structural logic and naturally flowing logic, one should know to write a paragraph, the basic unit, well. That is to say composing paragraph in one consistent context becomes the basis of writing.

Third, seeing from content perspective, a good writing should be appealing, persuasive, interesting and impressive; it is necessary to learn storytelling. If one can make up stories for any writings, the writing becomes interesting as it unfolds and gains attention. The common feature writings arousing others’ sympathy, such as old stories like Chunhyang-jeon and Shimcheong-jeon as well as recent writing like American President Obama’s autobiography Dreams from My Father, have is the structure of tale. Storytelling is important in writing. Especially, stories with context stimulate intelligence and emotion simultaneously.

Parts explaining to “think broad and deep after constructing the story structure” and “logical thinking being thinking priorities by inquiring what parts are important with vertical thinking after understanding the overall context with lateral thinking” are applicable in writing. Proper usage of inductive method and deductive method is also emphasized.
