The bad economic climate has taken a toll on the annual Literary Festival of Antigua (year 2009). The event will likely resume next year depending on the funding from sponsors. There is a possibility that the event will be conducted every other year if funding problems persist. One of the officials, Mrs. Arthurton, added "That way, we can really concentrate on bringing in the best authors and putting on a valuable and enjoyable event."
Antigua and Barbuda International Literary Festival, begun in 2006 and runs for 3 days in the month of November. It features well known authors, publishers and screenwriters from Caribbean and North America.
Last year it was held at the Jolly Beach Hotel. Popular participating authors included Junot Diaz, Tina McElroy Ansa and Eric Jerome Dickey. To date more than 65 authors have participated. It featured workshops for young writers, author readings on the beach, Live entertainment, book sales and a lot more. A Gala Opening Ceremony and reception which included top officials of Antigua. The event depends heavily on sponsors.
Antigua is well known for its "365 beaches" and the crystal white Jolly Beach is the most popular one of them, that's exactly where the Literary Festival is held. Last year the Jolly Beach hotel offered an excellent 4 night/5 day package including accommodations, meals, drinks, Festival entrance, airport transfers ad fees for about $805 per person. In Spanish, the island names mean "Ancient" and "Bearded". In addition to Literary Festival, every August there is a Carnival celebrating the abolition of slavery. Antigua is well connected by air from U.S., Canada and other parts of Caribbean.
