Staff taking part worked on a range of manufacturing related tasks that were designed to improve operational efficiency at the site. Tasks undertaken as part of the NVQ programme included creating standard operating procedures for the running of machinery, improving information filing systems and identifying cost savings.
One improvement project identified and implemented by some of the staff taking part involved improving checks at one work station to boost the quality of the product. Ian Whalley, Shift Manufacturing Manager at Ryvita calculated that the improvement would save the company between £25-£40k per annum.
Ian Whalley told us, " Since starting at Ryvita I have looked to roll out continuous improvement to the business, with varied success. I identified that the short fall was that it was not a one person exercise and that a team of personnel would be required."
Ian continues... "Following discussions with our HR team, it was deemed a training package was required. This is when Business Impact UK, as the resource to help us undertake this, began delivering their programme. A number of key personnel from within the business were identified to undertake the training which has gone exceptionally well and has given the tools and techniques to the operators, which they can now bring into practice as and when required."
David Murray, North West Operations Director for Business Impact UK said, “ We are delighted to be able to support Jordans Ryvita with their training needs and desire to engage staff in lean techniques to develop a culture of continuous improvement at their Stockport site. Feedback on the programme from both the managers and production staff has been excellent.
Overall Site Manager, Terry Reynolds, added: "This is a great initiative that will help us develop the capability of the site overall by investing in the people who work here. We have made a number of key improvements to the environmental footprint of our manufacturing processes recently - cutting emissions, increasing recycling and reducing water usage. The NVQ process will help us work in a more effective way all round, which in itself will help us develop the capability of the site for the long term. "
