In a report entitled: Database Analysis of Adults with Bipolar Disorder Consuming a Micronutrient Formula, Dr. Dermot Gateky, Department of Economics, New York University, NY, USA and Dr. Bonnie J. Kaplan, Department of Community Health Sciences, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, reported the following key findings:
• The mental health improvements in the group were associated with increasing micronutrient dosage and decreased psychotic medications
• Over 50% of the patients showed at least a 50% symptom improvement at 3 and 6 months
• Symptom reduction of over 75% was reported by one-third of the participants, and this reduction was sustained at 6 months suggesting the benefits were not the result of placebo effects.
“The decrease in symptoms was significant for individuals who were taking psychiatric medications as well as those who were not”
“...the group with the higher Medication Index seemed to be somewhat disadvantaged:
44%-56% for the others).”
“People searching for nutritional methods to manage their mood symptoms are likely to have been ineffectively treated by pharmaceuticals, and are not necessarily representative of everyone with bipolar disorder. In other words, many if not most of the participants in the database would probably be considered treatment resistant...the most difficult to treat, rendering these positive findings even more important clinically.”
A growing body of evidence now supports a strong nutrient component to mental disorders, particularly bipolar disorder.
