Since its launch the Volkswagen Beetle has proven to be probably the most popular car ever made with probably the longest manufacturing run of any particular car. The Karmann Ghia was designed to meet this demand fitted the bill. A German Coach works called Karmann, coupled with an Italian design firm called Ghia designed a car that was essentially VW Beetle underneath but had a body shell that would meet this new demand. The resulting car had a design that was pleasing to eye and looked like a super stylish sports car.
Karmann Ghias appealed to two different sections of people- one section that desired a durable European touring vehicle and the other section that wanted a Porsche like vehicle at an affordable price. Volkswagen successfully satisfied both these sections with the Karmann Ghia.
Volkswagen produced the Karmann Ghia for around eighteen years with only a few different models. The main 2 options were the Karmann Ghia Coupe and the Karmann Ghia Cabriolet. People who used the car were very much happy with the performance. While on the road, it didn’t feel underpowered, although the car was not capable of attaining speed of 100 miles per hour like its rival vehicles, the owners were so satisfied with its cool looks that the performance was overlooked. The other benefits of the car got more significance than the racing aspects and hence it was a success.
One of the most vital facts to consider is that Volkswagen mentioned everything about the car during advertising. During the promotion, they made it clear that Karmann Ghia is identical to Beetle mechanically. The honest campaign of advertising even had a slogan "The 1963 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. Slower, but Prettier Than Any Porsche!” People got instantly attracted to the smart advertising and readily grabbed the vehicle. Though the import duties were high at that time, it didn’t stop people from purchasing the car, which became a classic model in the future.
