Sept. 30, 2009 - PRLog -- The 5th annual Coweta Up In Smoke BBQ Cook-off will be held, Saturday October 3rd at the Coweta County Fairgrounds on Pine Road in Newnan, Ga.  This year's theme is M*A*S*H 30263 and is designed to honor our veterans and our troops.  The Newnan Rotary Club is assisting this year and all proceeds are to benefit the Rotarians efforts along with additional local charities.  The gates open at 10am on Saturday and the event runs through 5:30pm.

There are more than 43 teams competing this year from all over the southeastern United States, with both professional and backyard divisions represented.  Many local companies and volunteers have put together a fun filled family event for all to enjoy.

As in years past, there will be a "Kids Zone" with bounce houses and kids activities, a horse shoe competition and a fireman's rodeo along with many arts and crafts vendors with offerings for everyone.  New this year will be a "Virtual" Rollercoaster ride!!!  Never leave the ground, but feel the sensation of being on a real rollercoaster!!  In keeping with our M*A*S*H Theme, there will be military displays and the "feel" of a military encampment.  Our teams have been encouraged to dress the part.

The U.S. Army will be present with their Rock Wall and this year the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation will be present with a Vietnam era "Loach" helicopter on display and will be giving rides, all day, in a Vietnam era "Huey" Helicopter.  Helicopter rides are a $50.00  donation, with a 100% tax deductible certificate being given to each rider.  This is a non-profit donation to the Army Avaiation Heritage Foundation. This year the event is specifically themed to honor our veterans and our troops that are active and/or currently deployed.  The Family Readiness Group (FRG) for Coweta County's local Army National Guard Armory will be present having a bake sale for the members of Bravo 2/121 that are currently deployed in Afghanistan.

This event is the largest in the state of Georgia as sanctioned by the Florida BBQ Association.  Proclaimed by the state Senate, this event is the official Georgia State Championship for the Florida BBQ Association.  Winners of this event are eligable for the national Jack Daniel's Invitational Cook-Off.  As competitions go, this one is fierce and anyone wishing to taste an amazing sampling of BBQ is encouraged to come and bring your appetite.  In addition to the double-blind judged competition, there is a "Peoples Choice" Competition where the guests can purchase upto 24 samples of BBQ, for a small fee, and vote on their personal favorite!!  This is a crowd pleaser and sells out very quickly. In addition, there are a number of teams that will also be selling their barbecue throughout the day.

The gates open to the public at 10:00 am on Saturday October 3rd and the event is being held at the Coweta County Fairgrounds located at Exit 41 on I-85.  Go north on U.S. 29 approximately 1 mile and turn left onto Pine Road.  The entrance will be marked.
