Citizenship means with that your ligally citizen of that country. Moreover, some countries allow to have multiple citizenship without interpeting old. For example, austalia allows to have multiple citizenship for its country people.

Every country has different rules and regulations to get citizenship or visa also. Considering U.S.,  one can has citizenship in two ways with nautralization or based on parents. Nautralization is process by which foreign citizen would be granted as U.S citizenship. Moreover, for citizenship there is required to have permanent resident or green card holder before fulfil form.

But what would be minimum qualification for nautralization.
1). You should have permanent address in U.S from last year.
2). You should have  permanent address in U.S for 3 years and meet all other requirements as spouse of U.S citizen.
3). You have been qualify U.S armed forces services.
4). Your child may qualify, if your parents are U.S citizenship.
For Further step, there is required to have nautralization test for citizenship. With other rules like should be more than 18, should be present for 30 months, in last 5 years. Be able to read to english, and may able to understand U.S. government.

For spouse, there would be some changes may be in rules and regulation and having 3 years permanent resident in U.S., physically persent in U.S for 18 months out of 3 years. Able to read and write english, and able to understand U.S history.
