Walk from Obesity is a nationwide event to increase public awareness about obesity related health conditions and reduce associated discrimination. The funds raised through the walk will support the ASMBS Foundation’s mission to develop programs focused on prevention, research, education and advocacy for all those affected by obesity.
Consistent with national trends, obesity has been rising steadily in NJ. It is estimated that approximately 37%* of NJ residents are overweight and about 22%* are classified as obese (*source NJ Health Senior Services).
Obesity is linked to many health conditions such as diabetes, depression, heart disease, hypertension, breast cancer and more. The New Jersey Bariatric Center and the American Society of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery hope that the Walk from Obesity will raise awareness of the severity of this disease and educate the public about the causes and available treatment options that exist for those affected by obesity.
