KARLSKRONA, Sweden – Outpost24, The Technology Leader in Vulnerability Assessment and Management, today announced that the Software Business Research Unit (SBL) of the Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) has begun a study on the state of network security in businesses in Finland using Outpost24’s OUTSCAN solution. The study is conducted by the SBL during autumn 2009 in cooperation with the BIT research center.
The Helsinki University of Technology has selected Outpost24’s OUTSCAN to conduct the scans for the study. OUTSCAN is an automated service used to discover vulnerabilities in a network, providing a report with identified vulnerabilities that are rated and combined with a recommended remedy. OUTSCAN has an extensive vulnerability database which is updated on a daily basis and is aligned with the CVE (Common Vulnerability and Exposures) standard for information security vulnerability names. OUTSCAN also has several mechanisms in place to ensure an effective yet non-intrusive scan towards the targeted networks, minimizing any possible network interruptions.
During the study, OUTSCAN will be run on all the participating company’s networks as authorized. At the end of the study an anonymous summary of the results will be published by TKK. All participating companies will also receive an individual network perimeter security assessment by OUTSCAN. The Finnish national Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-FI) recommends that Finnish companies participate in the survey.
“All company-specific information will be held strictly confidential. Each participating company receives a report which contains information on how to effectively patch the identified vulnerabilities and how to improve their IT network security.” says SBL Project Manager, Christian Frühwirth.
The research project is being conducted to help Finnish companies improve their IT security level and practice taking the appropriate measures to protect their sensitive data. The results will be available by the end of 2009 with a plan to review the Finnish network security status annually.
The TKK Software Business Laboratory is one of the leading research units in Finland in the area of software business and headed by Prof. Jussi Autere. Among other things, SBL is well known for its annual Finnish software industry survey OSKARI. The Laboratory also provides undergraduates education and postgraduate education leading to a Doctoral degree. www.sbl.tkk.fi
