Since Cystatin C is only 13kDa which is considered  a small protein , Cystatin C  is fully reabsorbed and broken down by the renal tubules and not secreted .   When the kidneys are functioning normally, concentrations of Cystatin C in the blood are stable, but as kidney function deteriorates, the concentrations begin to rise .  Research also supports that  Cystatin C levels are unaffected by race, age , mass  or gender making it the most sensitive of markers during early stages of Chronic Kidney Disease.
