William Dunkerley, media analyst and publishing consultant, has written a new blog article entitled "Success Breeds Success." Drawing upon past experiences with publishers, he makes the point that publishers actually have the ability to stimulate the market segments in which they publish. That in turn can stimulate the growth of their own publications.
The article focuses in particular upon a small quarterly magazine that was operating in the red. As a consultant, Dunkerley found that the publication was operating fairly efficiently, but generating insufficient revenues; therefore, he devised a multi-faceted strategy to boost profits. Methods included implementing new strategies, staff training, a new workplace coaching program, new circulation marketing materials and programs, and enhanced editorial content in the quarterly itself. Particular emphasis was placed on attracting subscribers who would ultimately bring money to advertisers. The results were so drastic that the quarterly eventually became a monthly.
