As the world’s largest sub-continent, India’s sheer vastness and diversity of culture have earned the country a place amongst the most fascinating destinations for intrepid adventurers. The busy streets of Delhi, the beaches of Goa and the backwaters of Kerala have in recent years, become more accessible to alternative travellers and gap year explorers, in search of a more fulfilling and cultural experience.

Forward thinking company Gap Year for Grown Ups were among the first to give mature travellers adventurous, cultural and life-changing travel options around the world. Offering not just the chance to set off on a range of exciting trips, but also the opportunity to gain unique cultural insights, and contribute to worthwhile volunteer projects. The company’s latest programme combines an authentically Indian travel experience with complete cultural immersion.

The India Community Development project is the ideal opportunity for travellers who want to make a real impact during their stay. Volunteers will be able to get involved in a variety of activities aimed at improving health and regenerating facilities within local communities, as well as exploring the sights of Himachal or Rajasthan.

Explorers will be able to devote their skills to areas that need them the most, from helping with vital labour work to increasing awareness of health issues. Active travellers can get stuck in with helping to build schools, houses, renovate community buildings, and can even lend a hand with a little interior decoration.

Those looking to devote themselves to social community work are also desperately needed to educate community members about hygiene and healthcare issues, nutritional diets, HIV prevention and to increase IDD (Iodine Deficiency Disorders) awareness. Volunteers can get creative with information and activities sessions and work on finding new ways to make learning about important issues fun.

Additional excursions will give travellers plenty of opportunities to see some of India’s many famous sights. After a brief exploration of Delhi, adventurers set off on a trip to the stunning Taj Mahal, before proceeding to either Himachal or Rajasthan.

Himachal volunteers will be in for a cultural treat with an inclusive visit to Amritsar’s Golden temple and the chance to witness a border crossing ceremony. Explorers staying for longer will also travel to McLeod Ganj, home to the Dalai Lama and base of the Exiled Tibetan government.

Travellers heading to Rajasthan will experience a little more of India’s wild side, with an excursion to Ranthambore National Tiger Reserve, including an amazing chance to marvel at these magnificent creatures during two tiger safaris. Volunteers in for the long haul will learn about Hindu culture and explore the beautiful desert surroundings of Pushkar from the hump of a camel.

This Indian adventure offers true explorers the opportunity to live and work amongst local people, absorb Indian culture and see some of India’s most famous sites.
