Fledgling designer Victoria Beckham has again won praise from the fashion community following the launch of her latest collection at New York Fashion Week.
As her models walked the runway the former Spice Girl talked a small audience of buyers and journalists through each design, an astute business move on her part. The intimate showings appeared to make those invited feel special and gave Victoria a chance to prove her knowledge on the subject of fashion, which has never really been in doubt in the Models Direct office.
In fact it seems logical that Mrs Beckham should gain acknowledgement and success at last within the fashion industry, an area for which she has demonstrated a natural flair and style for years, despite many other less successful ventures.
The Spring/Summer collection is Beckham’s third, and evening wear was included in the designs for the first time, including a beautiful red silk gown with a bold black trim. Most of the other pieces followed her usual leaning towards a more tailored look but you could see more confidence coming through, and apparently with good reason.
'So accomplished was the cut; so deftly chosen was the fabric and so masterful the execution that it was hard to believe this was the work of a novice,' said Evening Standard fashion editor Laura Craik.
Having worked as a catwalk and photographic model and with a wealth of experience dressing in couture clothing behind her, maybe it should not be at all surprising that ‘Posh’ has learnt something of a good cut over the years!
It seems she has finally found her niche.
Beckham responded humbly to her success last week. 'I know I used to be in a pop group and I’m married to a footballer – a very lovely footballer,' she said. 'But I’m grateful that people are prepared to leave their preconceptions at the door and let the dresses speak for themselves. The sell-through has been amazing.'
