Hearst Magazines Digital Media Partners With ModiFace to Launch Beauty Makeover Tool

New application on RealBeauty.com lets users upload photos and automatically calibrates the image with instant visualizations of new hairstyles, hair colors and cosmetics beauty makeovers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Sep 25, 2009 -
New York - Hearst Magazines Digital Media, a unit of Hearst Magazines, and ModiFace Inc. today announced the launch of a technologically-enhanced beauty makeover tool on RealBeauty.com, a comprehensive online beauty destination launching later this month. This new makeover tool allows users to upload photographs, without having to calibrate facial positioning, and instantly see how they would look with new hairstyles, hair colors and cosmetics. In future phases, the application will allow users to visualize anti-aging and simulate weight loss. The makeover tool can be found on RealBeauty.com and will be available in the coming months on the Web sites for Seventeen, Marie Claire, Good Housekeeping, Redbook and Harpers Bazaar. An iPhone version of the application will also become available following the launch of the web applications.

“We chose ModiFace as our partner in part because they conducted extensive scientific research while developing their beauty makeover tool and we believe that research really paid off. No other tool on the market automatically calibrates the positioning of the face once a photo has been uploaded. The ModiFace tool does this with a level of sophistication and visualization that is not available in other applications,” said Chuck Cordray, senior vice president and general manager, Hearst Magazines Digital Media. “ModiFace has also made it simple for us to monetize the tool through the integration of advertising and sponsorship opportunities.”

“Another key element of the technology is the inclusion of branded cosmetics,” said Dr. Parham Aarabi, CEO and founder of ModiFace Inc. “We have five PhDs working at improving our technology on a daily basis and a team of tech experts who are continually updating the tool with the latest styles and products. Our ongoing partnership with Hearst will ensure that all of their participating sites feature the latest color trends and styles for users to interact with.”

On this easy-to-use tool, users can simply upload their photos for facial processing. Once the photos are uploaded, the technology--using patented algorithms--detects the face, lips, eyes, and nose and automatically selects regions on which to apply makeup. These algorithms are based on nearly a decade of research at Stanford University and the University of Toronto and are what truly differentiate the product from others on the market. Once the facial features are detected, the tool selectively applies makeup or other effects to the face in a matter of seconds, and shows the user her before and after photos. Users can then email the result to friends or family, print a list of products used on the face, or share their personal beauty results on Facebook or Twitter.
