Ah, the postcards, the palm trees and the flower leis. It’s the local music, the Hawaiian luaus, and the smell and taste of Hawaiian food that keeps many coming back for more vacations.  Unfortunately, Hawaii’s culture and people are quickly becoming a watered down void of authenticity, silenced by the rules and regulations of greed and commercialization since the U.S takeover in 1893.

Catherine Bauknight, celebrated and known international photojournalist, has produced an emotional and educational documentary that delves into what is happening behind the vanishing of Hawaii’ana: the culture, the traditions and sustainability of the islands. In this inspiring and moving film, the Native Hawaiians show first-hand how the people of Hawaii do indeed have a voice; a voice of truth, passion, and a will to continue their fight to connect and live with their culture and their land.

Based on facts discussed in the film, native Hawaiians are in an uphill battle that includes the ‘Apology Resolution’, a U.S. Public Law adopted in 1993 in which the U.S Government apologized for the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1893. While looking for an advantage that will allow them to reacquire specific lands once patented to them by Hawaiian royalty, the resolution has served as a major impetus for the Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement that has been the subject of intense historical and contemporary debate.

Hawaii A Voice for Sovereignty is a rare and insightful journey into how Hawaiian traditions are imperative to Hawaii’s organic survival and to its history, its people, and their passion to preserve its validity.
