TEFL specialists i-to-i have enlisted an official blogger for their first round of Teach in China internships to give prospective EFL teachers a taste of what teaching in China is all about.
TEFL novice Craig Barber, 22, is keeping the members of i-to-i’s travel community, Campfire, as well as the wider world, up to speed with his experience of teaching in Shanghai over the course of his five month internship.
Craig, who is originally from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, jetted out to China in August after completing i-to-i’s comprehensive 120 hour combined TEFL course. During the course, which is part of the internship, he gained a good footing in TEFL theory on an 100 hour online course and put that theory into practice on an action-packed 20 hour weekend course.
Craig, who has just finished studying classics at university in Leeds, has never travelled outside of Europe before, but that hasn’t put him off. Before leaving he wrote on his blog, which can be found at http://www.i-
He is now putting the skills learnt on the theory element of the internship into practice teaching kids at a kindergarten in Shanghai. Over the course of the internship, which lasts until February, he’ll gain hundreds of hours of teaching practice, as well as earning cash to fund further adventures in this amazing country.
Speaking about his ‘trial of fire’ on his first day, he said: “My first day of teaching ever went much better than I thought it would, it was actually quite fun! The lessons that I had planned went quite well and I had a Chinese teacher in the class with me which made it much easier.
“I left the school after my first 8 hours feeling uplifted and quite pleased with myself.”
