The goal of this list is to give new renters a helpful resource when searching for a new living space. This is the second of a four part series made to assist renters in making a well informed decision.
1. Start online! Figure out where, what size, and how much! Then start surfing the web. There are numerous sits that allow you to easily find the perfect home by simply indicating some type of criteria. Reeapartments.com is one such site that allows you to find an apartment by either picking location, size or price. You can then explore each community and narrow your choices down.
2. Renters should then compile and call potential landlords with a series of questions. The idea is to eliminate as many properties off a list that do not fit the specific needs and desires of renters. Remember to take good notes for future reference; this includes the date called, cost, neighborhood, etc.
o When calling a property, renters should give the landlords the information they need: When they plan to move ("between August 15th and 31st"), what they’re looking for (how many bedrooms?), and price range (less than $700). If pets are an essential, renters should mention this as soon as possible.
o If renters find an apartment that meet their needs, they should ask if they can make an appointment to visit and see the apartments the property has available. Sometimes, the unit that meets a renter’s needs will not be available for showing until close to the move-in date. If this is inconvenient, renters should ask if the landlord can show them an apartment like it, and if possible receive a floor plan of the desired unit.
o Try scheduling appointments in the same area around roughly the same time. This save time, gas and money when looking at apartments and also helps renters get a feel for certain neighborhoods.
3. Potential renters should show up to their appointments on time. Get driving directions in advance and make sure there is enough time to find the complex.
