An Israeli Arab was shot and killed early this morning by IDF soldiers near Beitar Illit, after the Arab refused to stop for inspection at an army checkpoint.
Soldiers on duty at the checkpoint took immediate action when a vehicle drove through an army barricade and lightly injured one of the soldiers. The soldiers opened fire on the driver, and he was instantly killed. The Central Command is investigating the circumstances of the incident.
The checkpoint is located on a main road between Beitar Illit and Tzur Hadassah, where soldiers conduct routine inspections of vehicles traveling in both directions on the road. This morning, a vehicle rammed through a barricade, and grazed an army jeep, lightly injuring one soldier. Other soldiers on duty at the checkpoint opened fire, shooting and killing the Arab driver, who had an Israeli identity card and was a resident of East Jerusalem.
Reuven Ruby, an volunteer with Zaka who was summoned to the scene, told Gali Tzahal this morning what occurred: "We arrived on the scene and saw a car that had crashed into the hillside. We approached the car and found one passenger inside, lying across the two front seats. We attempted to resuscitate him, but were not successful. A paramedic and doctor on the scene confirmed the man's death."
