Perseverance. A word heavily used in the music business when describing an artist on the lip of stardom after many years of work through underground and independent mediums. A word an artist can hang their hat on no matter the results. Without the love for music, perseverance likely wouldn’t be attributed to an artist’s success.
Jay Young’s career equals perseverance. Never an artist to gain widespread national or regional attention, he has stormed forward under many of radar working the Texas underground scene. In his sixth year with Houston based Showtyme Entertainment, he has released a handful of work and worked with many of the artists that have seen the national success from the Lone Star state.
Although the delay of his debut album due to distribution hang ups dealt a setback in the summer of 2009, Jay remained on track and returns with his new street album, Exordium. The adequately titled 14 track offering showcases Jay Young juggling in house production supplied by Comfort with a touch of industry production to keep the mixtape essence intact.
Standout tracks include the Lyfe Jennings assisted “Cops Up”, “Swagger”, “On The Go” and “Show You How To Do That” featuring Magno and Boss Hogg Outlaw Killa Kyleon.
With plans of a quadrology to Exordium, a DJ Chuck T presented mixtape and other releases to close out 2009 prior to a first quarter release of the reworked debut, Never Seen It Coming it now looks like perseverance can be used in the same sentence as Jay Young.
