more impact than a terrorist attack or a hurricane and might be comparable in scope to
a war.3” Estimates of deaths due to such a pandemic range up to 142 million4, but the
grim truth is that no one really knows.
What these and other reports indicate is that medicine is woefully unable to keep up
with the microscopic intruders which threaten our very existence. Viruses in particular
have always been difficult to defend against. There are very few pharmaceutical drugs
that have any effect at all on viruses, and even then they are often accompanied by
severe side effects. Our immune systems are unprepared for even the common cold
and flu, so it becomes completely overwhelmed when faced with new or particularly
virulent pathogens, such as HIV and other retroviruses, bird flu (H5N1), ebola virus,
Hepatitis B and C viruses, hantavirus and others. The same is true of pathogenic
