Scottsdale, Arizona. Hawaiian Experience Spa has raised $300 to support local residents with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). The $300 was presented to Jen Scherr, the Vice-President of the EDSF Phoenix Metro Group, a support group for local residents with EDS. Hawaiian Experience Spa massage therapists treat several clients with EDS and the owners of the Scottsdale day spa actively work with EDS patients and groups to help bring attention to this genetic disorder which afflicts 1 in 5000 Americans.
“Owning a day spa with a strong focus on medical massage, I believe it is our responsibility to do whatever we can to support our clients”, says Steve Ibach, owner of Hawaiian Experience Spa and senior medical massage therapist.
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by joint pain and hypermobility, stretchy delicate skin, and other symptoms. People with EDS have unstable joints, fragile skin, or vascular problems, because of a genetic defect in their connective tissue. EDS affects at least 1 in 5000 people. Currently there is no cure and research is limited to treating symptoms and searching for the gene responsible for the condition.
