Sept. 18, 2009 - PRLog -- Covington, LA: Calling all pups on the North Shore…there’s a new dog on this side of Lake Pontchartrain! Camp Bow Wow Covington, 14279 Highway 1085, has opened its play yards as the city’s premier Doggy Day and Overnight Camp. Now North Shore puppy parents can leave their dogs at Camp while they’re at work, running errands or heading out of town for a well-earned vacation, secure in their knowledge that their pups will be well cared for. All campers – pedigreed pups and motley mutts alike – are encouraged to socialize, romp and play the day away in this upscale domain for dogs.

Camp owners and Top Dogs, Jason and Scarlett Dalton designed the new state-of-the-art 8,100-square-foot camp with three large climate-controlled indoor play areas that open to spacious outdoor play yards - allowing campers to roam in and out as they like. “At Camp Bow Wow, it really is all about the dogs,” said Jason Dalton. “Scarlett and I have been dog lovers our entire lives. Our Camp is designed to respect the individuality of each pup. Giving them the freedom to socialize, choose where they want to play, or sniff out a quiet spot. They’re in the play yards all day, not confined to crates or runs. That’s why we stress the free interview day. It gives us an opportunity to get to know each pup and how he or she reacts in social settings.” Play yard shenanigans are broadcast live from the many Camper Cams® installed around the camp, so interested puppy parents can log on to the Camp’s website to see what their pup is up to.

After playing all day, day campers return home happy and ready to relax. Overnight campers retreat to one of the camp’s 61 private, climate-controlled cabins for dinner, downtime and a tasty Campfire Treat. The cabins, all furnished with comfy cots and soft fleece blankets, are large enough that several campers from the same family can bunk together at their parent’s request. To avoid upset stomachs, parents of overnight campers are encouraged to bring their pup’s food from home. Camp Bow Wow Covington will also offer bathing services.

All canine campers at Camp Bow Wow are supervised by a staff of Certified Camp Counselors® trained in Pet First Aid and CPR, dog behavior, group play dynamics, safety and health management. To ensure the happiness and safety of all campers, the camp will be staffed with 1 counselor for every 15 campers at all times. Camp Counselors monitor and rotate dogs to maintain a consistent energy level in each play yard.

For the safety and security of all campers, new arrivals are required to participate in a free interview day before they can attend camp. Canine campers must be on flea and tick preventative; at least four months old; spayed or neutered if six months or old; up-to-date on their Rabies and Distemper vaccinations; have had a Bordetella (canine cough) vaccination within the last six months; and be in general good health and of sound temperament.

The Dalton’s are no strangers to pet service organizations. Scarlett, a native of the Covington area, was a Vet’s assistant for over 20 years and has run a mobile dog grooming business since 2004. Not long after she ventured into the grooming business, she recognized the need for an upscale pet hotel in the area. Jason, who works for ABB, a Swiss Electrical Engineering firm, put together a business plan for a “Ritz-Carlton” for dogs and then put the idea aside. Not long afterward, he read about Camp Bow Wow and attended Discovery Days in Denver, CO. They came away so impressed by the organization and the all day play aspect of the Camp concept that Scarlett’s father, a fellow dog lover, decided to help finance the venture. “We couldn’t have done it without him,” said Jason. The Dalton’s currently have one rescue dog at home and three human children, who will all be helping out at Camp.

Camp Bow Wow Covington has plans to foster and help adopt-out at least five dogs from Humane Society when they open, to help alleviate overcrowding at the shelter. They also plan to work with the local Red Cross.
