The SSV Chorale, directed by Maestra Elena Sharkova, has become known for its eclectic mix of vibrant programs. It often performs at the California Theatre, as soloist choir with the Symphony, and presents in December " Carols in the California". Formerly the San Jose State University Chorale, the SSV Chorale first performed with Symphony Silicon Valley in Poulenc's Gloria in December 2004, a concert hailed by the Mercury News as one of 2004's most noteworthy Bay Area musical events. Earlier, the Chorale served as "choir in residence" for the former San José Symphony Orchestra for 15 years. Its highly acclaimed performances included such masterpieces as Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, and Symphony No. 9, Verdi's Requiem, and Orff's Carmina Burana. The Chorale has collaborated with other professional performing arts organizations such as Ballet San Jose. In the summer of 2000 and 2007 the Chorale toured Europe bringing music from the Americas.
