After hijacking a passenger plane from Eastern Europe, where there isn’t the same security restrictions as elsewhere, Al Qaeda terrorists planned to fly it into a busy terminal at Heathrow airport. They would wipe one of the world’s busiest international airports, killing hundreds of people. The plan was designed to punish Blair (Bin Laden’s number one enemy) for England’s role in Iraq.
For what appeared to be no apparent threat, Tony Blair ordered armoured vehicles and hundreds of troops to Heathrow.
Leader of the al Qaeda cell, based in east London, Abdulla Ahmed Ali of Walthamstow, wanted to outshine 9/11 with the world’s largest terrorist attack, He wanted to create what he described as a “world shock”.
The three Islamic Brits also planned to blow up 18 transatlantic jets, killing up to 10,000 people. They wanted to blow up United Airlines, American Airlines and Air Canada commercial jets. Liquid bombs made with hydrogen peroxide, inside lucozade bottles, were to be taken on board. The planes would have taken off from Heathrow within two hours of each other from Terminal 3.
This security scare led to a clampdown at airports right around the globe, placing severe restrictions on how much liquid passengers are permitted to take on board.
Counter terrorist police and prosecutors spent over £35 million stopping the plot and bringing Ali to justice. He had received his training in Pakistan .
Police said the plot had been birthed in Pakistan, with finite instructions being passed to Ali during his frequent trips to Pakistan’s lawless border with Afghanistan. When Ali was arrested in August 2006 police found a blueprint for the plot in his tattered diary. They also found security arrangements and details of flights, including the seven targets, on a memory stick.
Ali, the ringleader, was so twisted, he had considered taking his baby son on his mission of death and warned in depraved video raves, about how the attacks would "leave body parts scattered in the streets".
