Sept. 16, 2009 - PRLog -- An Experiential Review of the book, My Stroke Of Insight by Jill Bolte Taylor Ph.D.

Upon reading Dr. Taylor’s book I was extremely impressed in her ability to recollect and convey her experience.  This review is experiential because I have experienced a severe brain injury.  I am uncertain if her stroke was classified as a severe injury but it may as well have because her account is extremely similar to what I experienced.

By reading it not only was I empowered to appreciate the experience of recovering from neural trauma, I was lead to some other understandings about my own recovery which led me to understand, even further, just how malleable the brain is.  Neuroplasticity might be the most amazing medical phenomena known to humanity.

The injury I sustained occurred during a 140 foot head first fall down a hill after a mountain bike race.  My brain banged against the jagged interior surface of my brain over rocks, boulders, and sage brush causing damage to nearly every region of my brain.  Dr. Taylor’s was physically different because it was localized to the area nearest a hemorrhage near the specific area of her brain that is responsible for language.   Although our injuries were physically different, our experiences and current perspective of life are extremely similar.
She does a perfect job of explaining her experience in what I believe is the most informative and entertaining way possible.  Her book is a fine combination of drama, knowledge, wisdom, and humor.  It’s not only an entertaining read, it really is informative and I feel I would have benefited tremendously through reading it even if I was not classically educated.

The explanation of her experience is profound but the part I enjoyed the most was the later part of the book.  She explains, very clearly, what it’s like to have the understanding that we at Brain Shift Technologies have coined the “Coma Connection”.  It was a pleasure reading the account of someone so classically trained describe what I struggled a decade to convey.  There is an understanding regarding life that accompanies neural trauma that really does set us apart.    Not only did she experience the feeling that roughly 12 million people experience  on an annual basis (the coma connection), she has the classical training which has afforded her the ability to articulate it clearly and concisely.

After a moderate to severe brain injury we who sustain the injury experience a gap between the personality we knew and loved before the injury and the personality we express post injury.  To bridge this gap we must communicate and it’s extremely fortunate that someone so articulate with a heart that seems unparalleled has decided to express her experience, points of view, opinions, and sound suggestions for moving forward after a similar injury.  Her understanding and love for others has changed my life forever and I appreciate her immensely.

I highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to understand, grow and expand their way of thinking.  Not only about neural trauma but life in general.

With sincere  Appreciation and Joy,

Jerry “The Brain Guy” Christensen
