MILL VALLEY, CA – September 15, 2009 – THE RED MACHINE, a caper adventure set in 1935, will have its world premiere at the 32nd annual Mill Valley Film Festival, one of Screen International's top-ten U.S. film festivals.  There will be two screenings of the movie:

Sunday, October 11, 3:45 p.m.
Monday, October 12, 4:30 p.m.

Both screenings will be held at the Smith Rafael Film Center, 1118 Fourth Street (Between A & B)
San Rafael, CA 94901.

Written and directed by Stephanie Argy & Alec Boehm, THE RED MACHINE stars Lee Perkins and Donal-Thoms Cappello as a U.S. Navy spy and a professional thief in pre-World War II Washington DC.  The two must break into the home of a Japanese military attaché and figure out the workings of a new code machine (nicknamed the Red Machine by the U.S. military) that Japan is using to encode top-secret messages – a mission complicated by the spy's encounters with people from his heart-breaking past in Japan.

THE RED MACHINE is Argy and Boehm’s feature directorial debut.  One of their short films, Gandhi at the Bat, also had its world premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival, where it was presented with a BAFTA honorable mention.  It then went on to play and win awards all over the world, including at the Baseball Hall of Fame, where film critic Jeffrey Lyons presented the movie with the Hall's Award for Filmmaking Excellence.  Gandhi at the Bat features eight actors from THE RED MACHINE, including Perkins and Thoms-Cappello.

Perkins, who grew up in Northern California, used to be a race car driver.  He started his racing career at Sears Point (now Infineon) Raceway, before going on to race successfully in the United States and Europe.  Actor Eddie Lee, who plays the Japanese military attaché, is also from the Bay Area and performed in numerous productions at Saratoga Light Opera while studying under theater director Ginger Drake.

In homage to the Depression-era practice of movie theater giveaways, the filmmakers will give each member of the audience a swag bag with souvenirs from THE RED MACHINE, along with a copy of Gandhi at the Bat.

At each screening, the filmmakers will also give away one $200 gift certificate for apparel by the designer who created the women's costumes for THE RED MACHINE, Annamarie von Firley of ReVamp, a fashion salon that creates authentic vintage-inspired reproduction clothing for men and women.

At 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, prior to the RED MACHINE screening, co-director Stephanie Argy will take part in a panel of “girl geeks,” women at the forefront of the digital industry, which will explore the intersection of technology and creativity.

The Mill Valley Film Festival was founded in 1978.  It has established an impressive track record for launching new films and the careers of new filmmakers and is well known for the quality of its programming.  Each year, the 11-day festival sells over 40,000 tickets and welcomes more than 200 filmmakers from around the world.  This year's festival will honor Clive Owen, who will also be on hand for the opening night film The Boys Are Back, directed by Scott Hicks (Shine).
