Going Lean in Tough Times

Going 'Lean' is a great investment, and is a crucial step for these tough economic times.

Sept. 15, 2009 - PRLog -- Going Lean in Tough Times is the topic for the Oregon Employer Council's Free Lunchtime presentation on September 17. Lowell Gibson of Recognition Specialties is our speaker and an expert on LEAN.

In this current troubling economic climate, the question many business owners are asking themselves is, "What can I do to position my company to best survive tough times?"

The answer to that question according to a growing group of businesses is one word, LEAN.

In order for companies to effectively compete on a local, national or international level is to implement high performance or lean techniques. says Lowell Gibson, co-founder and president of Southern Oregon High Performance Enterprise Consortium (SOHPEC).

Gibson has increased productivity and profitability in his own business, Recognition Specialties, a manufacturing company based in Grants Pass, Oregon. "We went from an order traveling 580 feet, to it going just over 100 feet," explains Gibson. Now, instead of an order taking three days to fill, the leaner process turns an order around in 24 hours.

Lean is more than just tools and techniques but rather a frame of mind that needs to permeate throughout any business. The benefits of lean are lower stress levels amongst employees, lower inventory levels, quicker production times, and cleaner, safer work environments.

Lean is not just for large companies, or manufacturing companies. Lean techniques are being used in the full spectrum of industry types. Many companies are implementing Lean Office techniques. Much of this is common sense, where you look at a process that you may do frequently on a daily basis I and question how you can streamline it and save steps.
