Daryn Kagan presents a profile The Tower of Hope, an organization that helps veterans wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan to have the opportunity to lead lives that are more independent by pairing them with service dogs. Founded by Cathy Carilli to memorialize her husband, Tom Stinton, who was killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, the organization is also a tribute to Stinton, his love for animals, and the service men and women who have sacrificed so much since Sept. 11, 2001.
The Tower of Hope, founded in 2006, also serves as a source of information about service dogs, and acts as an advocate for the greater use of service dogs for veterans who return from war with serious injuries and other disabilities. Since its creation, Carilli has expanded her efforts for The Tower of Hope by working to provide service dogs to those with other disabilities and illnesses, including autism, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, spinal injuries, and any other illness or disease that limits an individual’s ability to be independent.
“When I speak to these kids, they are optimistic, they are positive, and they tell me how the dog has changed their lives,” Carilli tells Daryn. “It is the most overwhelming, humbling experience I think I will have ever had, and probably will ever have.”
