Sept. 14, 2009 - PRLog -- BURTON, Mich. – What does Landaal Packaging Systems have in common with Barbie, Motown Records, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Daytona 500? They were all founded 50 years ago in 1959.

Landaal Packaging Systems is proudly celebrating 50 years of business this month with an event featuring an unveiling of a film documentary of the firm’s accomplishments. Over the course of five decades, this community focused business has a deep business legacy to celebrate.

Back in 1959, Robert and Virginia Landaal founded Flint Boxmakers, which is the foundation for what is known today as Landaal Packaging Systems. From the beginning, a structure was set in place to operate as industry leaders with a strong morale conscious.

According to Steve Landaal, President of Landaal Packaging, their company’s long term success is due to their strong family focus on serving “clients, community and God.” These back-to-basics principles may be why the business industry and beyond have embraced Landaal Packaging and the family that owns it for half a century.

“I have a feeling that when Virginia and Robert Landaal came to this community, they not only had a very high business ethic but felt that it was so very important to give back to the community that was so good to them,”  said Linda Moxam, Director of Development at the Flint Cultural Center. “As the years progressed and their children Bob, Tom, Steve and Barb grew up, they taught them how to be philanthropists and community supporters as well. They truly look at the community as a family. Their generosity has been stellar. We're very blessed to have them in our community.”

The founders’ expert knowledge of the packaging industry also was a key early driver of the firm’s success.

“Back in 1939, my great grandfather wrote a book about the manufacture of paper board that is still considered a major reference in the field today,” said Bob Landaal II, Vice President of Sales & Marketing.

That same ambitious pioneering spirit has followed through generation after generation in the family owned business. It is also helping the company continue its business success through continued innovations in packaging technology.

Landaal Packaging Systems has always been on the cutting edge of manufacturing corrugated boxes, contract packaging, warehousing and distribution services. The vertically integrated business has provided a reliable just-in-time packaging supplier for its customer base; which has included companies like General Motors, Dow Agro Science, Koegel Meats, Michigan Sugar, along with many other Michigan-based businesses.

With a focus on the future, Landaal has diversified the company’s operations, while maintaining continued high quality standards and innovation.

“They really saw the handwriting on the wall with the auto industry and they began to diversify; getting into things like agriculture, getting into chemicals, getting into food, and their latest project into recycling and material recovery,” said Tim Hermann, Chief Executive Officer of the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce. “Their continued innovation and getting into new markets not only helps the business, but helps this community as well.”

Today, new sustainable product offerings highlight Landaal’s road to the future. The company is taking the term “Earth Friendly” to new heights in the packaging world.  Their 100 percent biodegradable shipping cooler is a viable alternative to the polystyrene coolers often discarded in landfills.

Landaal’s vision is also to help reduce the dependency on fossil fuels by providing a eco-smart option to plastic pails, jugs and tin cans for many liquid packaging applications including chemical, cleaning supply other industrial applications. Their innovative bag in the box product requires less transportation and is more recyclable than other competitive products.

Continuing the company’s tradition of innovation, Landaal is also currently in the process of taking on new challenges by revolutionizing the manner in which recycling occurs in the industry. Their dedication to research and development has formulated a breakthrough  technology that reduces the recycling process up to 70 percent; which is good for the environment and helps customers reduce expenses.

As the employees at Landaal mark this important 50-year milestone, they are ambitious and committed to growth along with the continued development of future sustainable products.
