Heritage Conservation Network, a Boulder-based, non-profit organization working to save the world’s architectural heritage, has changed its name to Adventures in Preservation. Adventures in Preservation will continue to offer the same high-quality, meaningful volunteer vacations that have been the hallmark of their programming since 2002, giving people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to combine travel and volunteering at historic preservation projects around the world. The new name is intended to highlight the participant experience, and to reflect the critical role that workshop participants play in each project’s success.
Past projects include restoration work at the Francis Mill, Waynesville, North Carolina; garden walkways at the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum, Bronx, New York; the Dr. Daems-Corbett House, Virginia City, Montana; as well as projects in Mexico, Italy, Ghana, Slovenia and Albania.
Adventures in Preservation invites you to make preservation your destination in 2010. Projects are scheduled in Kenya, the U.S., Armenia, Slovenia and Albania, where volunteers work with members of the local community to preserve a historic building. Each project is led by a technical expert who teaches and guides participants in their work, making these volunteer vacations a perfect way to learn new skills while experiencing a different culture. In Nevada City, Montana, participants will experience life in the Gold Rush days as they preserve the buildings of that era. The Nevada City workshop is Adventures in Preservation’
Workshops are also planned at the Jay Heritage Center in Rye, New York, where volunteers will be involved in restoring the 1907 carriage house, and the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum, Bronx, New York, where galleting work will continue in the terrace garden.
AiP’s new website will debut on November 1, but don’t wait until then to decide on one of their unique adventures. Registration is already open for AiP’s 2010 workshops, the first of which is in February in the World Heritage Site of Lamu, Kenya, where you can help restore a coral rag building and contribute to community renewal efforts. Space is limited, so register soon. For information on AiP and their exciting volunteer vacation opportunities, go to http://www.adventuresinpreservation.org.
